What a day! So glad that we had perfect weather. It was a super day of learning on the farm. We began by touching, brushing and milking a Brown Swiss (type of dairy cow) named Jacqueline. Then, we went off to see the baby calves in their hutches and learn what they eat. The calves were very cute, and we discovered that some of them liked to suck on their bottles so much, that they would even suck on our hands and fingers! Next, we tried our best at an obstacle course-we went around pails, over and under bales, into a calf hutch, and even through a big cow trailer. Then, with 4 of our friends, we pushed over a bale of straw. We learned that cows don't eat straw-that is just for their bedding. Then, we went inside the barn, saw the big milk tank and learned how the cows got milked. Then, the "yummy" part, we got a homemade cookie, and a small glass of milk. For some we got a glimpse of a new batch of kittens just born yesterday. Finally, we went off to see the tractor and learned what cows eat. Did you know that they have 4 stomachs? Did you know that some farmers put magnets in the cow's stomach to gather any metal objects that a cow might accidentally swallow? What a great day, no doubt your son or daughter came home tired today...maybe even a bit stinky!!!
